Google Calendar can only post notifications, and notifications obey Silent Mode and Focus. Changing the reminder time inside Google Calendar cannot fix that. An app that schedules a real system alarm can.
Every fix people try inside Google Calendar — longer reminder, second reminder, custom notification sound — changes the same thing: a notification. If your phone is silenced, none of it makes a sound. Here is what is actually going wrong, in the order it usually happens. If you want the general mechanism rather than the Google-specific one, the fuller explanation of why calendar reminders do not wake you covers it.
Which five things stop the alert reaching you?
In practice these overlap. Two or three are usually true at once.
- Silent Mode is on. Notification sounds are suppressed system-wide. Nothing inside Google Calendar overrides this.
- Focus or Do Not Disturb is on. Focus can stop the banner appearing at all, so there is nothing to see or hear.
- The event has no reminder. Invitations carry the organiser’s settings, which are frequently none.
- Notifications are set to email. A common Google default. Nothing happens on the phone at all.
- The Google Calendar app is not installed. If you read the calendar in another app, Google’s notification is never delivered.
Can you fix this in the Google Calendar settings?
Setting a 30-minute reminder instead of 10 gives you an earlier notification. Adding a second reminder gives you two. Choosing a custom sound changes what plays when the phone is not silenced. None of it changes the category, and the category is the problem.
This is worth knowing before you spend an afternoon in Settings. The behaviour you want is not in there.
What does an alarm do differently?
An alarm is scheduled with the operating system rather than posted as a message. iOS deliberately exempts alarms from Silent Mode, Focus and Do Not Disturb, because an alarm is the one thing you asked to be woken by. It also persists: it keeps ringing until you stop it, instead of disappearing after a second.
| Handled by | Silent Mode | What you do |
|---|---|---|
| Google Calendar reminder | Silenced | Nothing, it is automatic |
| Manual Clock alarm | Rings | Set one per meeting |
| Pealo | Rings | Nothing, it is automatic |
The practical fix
Leave your Google Calendar settings alone. Connect the account to an app that reads the events and schedules a real alarm before each one, which is what Pealo does with a Google Calendar account, then pick a lead time and forget it. Nothing changes inside Google Calendar, and the events you did not create get an alarm too, because the app applies your rule rather than the organiser’s.
Loud alarms for Google Calendar events
Connect your Google account and Pealo arms the alarms from there.
